Video Screening on Juneteenth Launches National Movement to Uplift Black Fathers in the Face of Family Court Injustice

Neptune, NJ — June 18, 2025 — In an urgent and deeply personal call to action, Derrick T. Griggs — a nonprofit leader, civic advocate, and father — announces the premiere screening of a powerful video documenting his 498-day struggle to reunite with his son, Ibrahim Griggs. The video will be shown at a special Juneteenth event on **Wednesday, June 19, 2025, from 6–10 PM** at the VFW, 1515 NJ-33, Neptune City, NJ 07753. This emotional story is not just about one father and one family; it is the spark for a growing national movement demanding visibility, justice, and reform for Black fathers across America.

The video tells the story of a system that has failed a good father. Despite documented fitness, stability, and a court-ordered custody evaluation in his favor, Derrick Griggs has been kept from his youngest son since the passing of his late wife, Dr. Abeer Griggs, in April 2024. His elder son, Derrick Jr., courageously walked away from his mother’s home and chose to live with his father in February — yet the system remains unmoved.

“This is bigger than my case,” says Griggs in the video. “This is about a system that erases Black fathers. That doubts our love. That ignores our voices. And it’s time for that to change.”

The movement is grounded in extensive research. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and multiple peer-reviewed studies, only 15.1% of custodial fathers in the U.S. are Black, compared to 62.9% who are white. Even when Black fathers demonstrate fitness, stability, and involvement, courts routinely favor others — driven by unconscious bias, outdated stereotypes, and systemic inequities.

In an open letter to U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Griggs wrote:
“This is not just about the Griggs family. This is about a national pattern of systemic bias that devalues the role of Black men in their children’s lives.”

Now, with support from community leaders and civic advocates, Derrick Griggs is launching a national campaign to demand reform of family courts, raise awareness about racial bias in custody decisions, and create space for the voices of Black fathers who have been rendered invisible.

The initiative calls on policymakers, faith leaders, nonprofit partners, and families to join the effort — not just with sympathy, but with action.

“We are launching a movement not just of protest, but of purpose. Not just of outrage, but of organizing,” Griggs said in a recent Juneteenth speech. “Let’s show them what a father’s love looks like when it becomes a force.”
